Because beach houses are often used for vacations, you can use decor to create a relaxing, restorative atmosphere by taking design cues from the natural surroundings. As you decorate your beach house, make the most of the beach setting by bringing elements from the landscape into your home and using colors that echo the ocean and sand.
Pale Colors
As you decorate your beach house, use pale colors that will make the most of the natural light to create an airy, open feeling. For a traditional look, start with white walls and a white ceiling and use furniture in the pale neutral hues of the sand. Add touches of the ocean and sky by using blue accents in pillows, picture frames, vases, and other accessories. If you have the budget, pale wooden flooring can add to the atmosphere
Natural Elements
To bring the relaxed feeling of the beach into your house, use natural elements as decor. A simple glass jar filled with beach rocks can be used as a subtle decoration for a mantle, entry table, or bathroom. In a sitting room or enclosed patio, use traditional beach chairs in a rustic, weathered finish. Pull in elements from the beach such as bleached driftwood, sea glass, sand, or seashells in accessories. For more secluded beach houses, use sheer curtains that do not cut off the line of sight even when closed. Because family and guests will naturally be attracted to large picture windows, use them as focal points when arranging furniture and other decor items.
Nautical Decor
A beach house is a natural place to showcase nautical decor elements. For an elegant, traditional look, find antiques that relate to sailing and ocean voyages. Look for items that can be used in a unique way. A weathered ship's steering wheel, for example, can be used as a wall hanging or as the base for a coffee table. As you shop, keep an eye out for ship lanterns, old fishing nets, navigation instruments, and antique ocean maps. If you can find them, salvaged dock pilings add a touch of drama to a room; use them as the base for a coffee table, roped together for end tables, or on either side of an outside door.
