Vinyl siding is an exterior building material that homeowners can paint themselves to customize the look of their home. Successfully painting vinyl siding depends on a combination of surface preparation and selection of the correct paint. The siding must be completely clean and dry and free of mildew before you begin painting. Use an acrylic and urethane paint in a shade no darker than the existing shade. If you darken the siding, it will absorb heat and may warp.
Instructions
1. Fill a 5-gallon bucket with warm water. Add a mild household detergent according to the package directions.
2. Dip a nylon scrub brush in the soapy water and begin scrubbing the vinyl siding, starting at the top and working toward the ground. Clean one side of the house with the soapy water then rinse it clean with a garden hose.
3. Repeat the scrubbing and rinsing, one wall at a time, until you clean all the vinyl siding surfaces. Examine the surface for any mildew that did not come off with the regular cleaning.
4. Fill a garden sprayer with 1 part bleach and 4 parts clean water. Spray any mildew spots with the bleach solution until they are dripping. Let the bleach sit for 10 minutes, then rinse it off with the garden hose.
5. Let the vinyl siding dry completely before you begin to paint.
