How's Fresh paint Color Measured

Paint Qualities

The most important measurement of paint color lies within the paint itself. There are of course many different paint colors and shades, and each has their own designation. There are devices that carefully measure paint color with spectrometer inspections, especially useful for digitally examining car colors. In addition to the color options, paints also include many different substances that change the effect of the color. Different glosses affect how shiny the paint is and how the light reflects off of it. Matte and flat finishes diminish how the light is reflected.

Light

Another main qualification of how paint color appears is what kind of light shines on it. There are many different types of light, and each will affect how the paint appears. This is why paint can look different at home in a room with a single bulb than it did under the glare of many lights at the store. Sunlight is the most natural type of light, but it changes throughout the day and color tones tend to change slightly with it. Sunlight low in the sky will give warmth and yellowish coloring to shades of paint, while sunlight in the latter parts of the day tends toward bluish, cool shading effects. Professional painting contractors and interior designers are well aware of the sun's effects on paint colors and will often examine test-spots of paint throughout the day to see how they appear under different lighting conditions.

Paint also appears different under artificial light. Incandescent and halogen lights tend to provide warm shades to colors, similar to the morning sun, especially colors in the yellow and red range. Fluorescent light is much cooler and enhances colors such as blue and green instead. Indoor lighting styles and types should always be considered when choosing paint colors.

Observer

The third primary factor taken into account when paint color is measured is human sight. The human eye and human brain pick up on colors in a certain way. Tests are conducted to measured what the average human perception of color is and what colors stand out most. Different people will always perceive light wavelengths with slight differences but an average understanding of vision is often necessary to correctly judge how a color will appear, especially when it is being created.
