Paint a gold frame a wood color by using faux wood grain painting techniques. Faux wood grain is created by running a paint comb and wood grain rocker tool through a layer of white paint that's placed over a layer of dark brown primer. The white paint is removed with these painting tools in a pattern that creates a dark groove on the surface that resembles wood grain.
Instructions
1. Tape off areas around the gold frame that you do not want to accidentally paint using masking tape. Sand the surface of the gold frame with sand paper. This will make the paint adhere evenly to the gold frame. Wipe the frame with a wet cloth to eliminate any dust created by sanding.
2. Apply an even layer of brown tinted primer to the gold frame with a paint brush. Allow 12 hours for it to dry.
3. Mix together the clear acrylic glaze and white latex paint in a 1-to-1 ratio, for example 1 quart to 1 quart, in a paint bucket. Stir with a paint stick. Apply an even layer of the glaze and white latex paint mixture to the gold frame with a foam paint brush or paint roller.
4. Place a paint comb at a 45 degree angle to the surface of the top of the frame while the glaze and latex paint mixture is still wet. Press down and pull the comb tines through the paint. Move the comb down in one full motion of your hand to make the lines you create straight. Make rows of combed sections moving in the same direction, from the top to the bottom of the entire frame. Overlap the rows as you make them with the paint comb.
5. Place the "heel," or back of the grain rocker tool, at the top of the frame on the first overlapped combed section of the paint. Pull the grain rocker tool down toward the bottom of the frame. Drag the entire grooved pattern of the grain rocker tool through the paint. You will see a wood grain pattern emerge. Repeat this process with the rest of the overlapped combed sections.
6. Let the faux wood paint finish fully dry and set for 24 hours before removing the masking tape.
