Build An Outhouse

Build an Outhouse

Sometimes, having an outhouse is just about that "coolness" factor; other times, its value is nostalgic or even practical. If you live somewhere where building your very own is a possibility, then read below for complete instructions on construct an outhouse.

Instructions

1. Choose the spot you'd like to construct your outhouse. This should be an area a little ways away from general traffic and away from any running water, such as a stream or brook.

2. Dig a pit for the base. Generally this is about three feet by three feet and about five feet deep. This must be deep enough to last awhile.

3. Construct the floor of the outhouse. You can do this with concrete or wood. Just add a hole in the middle for the waste to go through. The sides should fit tightly over the hole you've just dug.

4. Form a cover. Depending on your tastes you can add a riser by constructing a box out of wood and adding another hole on top of that. This will give you something to sit on and help with the smell.

5. Cover the pit with siding and paint. Corrugated or roll roofing should be added to keep the rain out.

6. Add ventilation to your privy. Depending on the type of outhouse you'd like to keep, a traditional crescent moon shaped opening may be all you need. In case of smellier situations however, its best to provide screen panels along the top of the outhouse.
