Repaint Plastic Wooden shutters

Before and after painting

The color of the plastic shutters on a home will fade pretty fast due to exposure to the elements. This in turn makes a home look dull and lifeless. Give your home a quick facelift by painting the existing shutters. If you don't have shutters, you can buying used ones inexpensively and repaint them to match your taste.

Instructions

1. Take the shutters down from your home, or purchase them from a yard sale, auction or other inexpensive place. As long as the shutters are in good shape, their color doesn't matter.

2. Wash all of the shutters with warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. Rinse the plastic shutters thoroughly with the garden hose and let them dry in the sun until all of their surface is dry.

3. Lay one shutter on its back, on a work surface that is easy for you to walk around. A couple of sawhorses work really well for this, if you have them. Work on only one shutter at a time.

4. Attach the spray paint handle to the can of spray paint, and shake the can well. Start by spraying the sides of the shutter first. Spray the can in a slow, steady motion to avoid runs on the shutters.

5. Spray the front surface of the shutter by moving in a back-and-forth motion from side to side. Again, avoid holding the can still or you will create runs in the paint. It takes very little time for the shutter to dry enough for you to pick it up and prop it against a tree or lay it on a picnic table, so that you can move on to the next shutter.

6. Don't try to paint the backs of the shutters. It's not necessary, as you won't see the back once it's against your house. You can use this method to brighten up the shutters' original color, or you can totally change the color for a whole new look.
