Interiordesign Suggestions For Log Houses

The right decorations can turn your simple log house into a palace.

The rustic style of log cabins and houses has long been valued and idealized, but living in a log house can be less than perfect. The beauty of the wood can become overwhelming if you don't weave in other colors, textures and styles. Knowing decorate your log cabin or house well is part of fully enjoying the relaxation and peace such a home can offer.

Soft Mood Lighting

Forget the modern ceiling light in the center of the room; a log home, whether the size of a cabin or the size of a mansion, requires more stylish lighting. Mood lighting and subtle lamp lighting can be a powerful element of cabin d cor, especially in bedrooms, where the lighting doesn't need to be sharp. Set up rustic-looking floor lamps in the corners. Consider lamp designs that take their cues from nature; for example, a lamp stand made out of, or made to look like, wood fits well in log cabin d cor.

Cozy Comforts

There's nothing quite like snuggling up with a warm flannel or knit blanket in cold winter months, particularly if you happen to be in a rustic log house or cabin. The remarkable thing about these functional blankets is that they're also decorative. When used correctly, these necessities add a festive and cozy look to any room. Fold a blanket and drape it over the back of a couch, or hang a hand-knitted blanket or a hand-sewn quilt in any blank part of the wall that needs to be livened up.

Area Rugs

A standard part of many log cabins is beautifully refinished wood flooring, but a hardwood floor can be chilly in the winter. Laying area rugs in the rooms of your log house will protect you from the cold floor and break up the color of the wood floor, while also bringing out the beauty of the hardwood. A small braided rug with a handmade appeal is prefect for a bathroom or kitchen, while a more ornate oriental rug may be perfect for the area between some overstuffed chairs in front of a fire.

Furniture

Purchase furniture that fits with the style of the house. An oversize leather arm chair will enhance a log house living room, while a pastel-colored floral-print couch may appear contradictory and unusual in such a setting. If you're feeling overwhelmed with the style, you can always break it up with wall hangings and furniture embellishments such as cozy throw pillows and quilts.
