Develop A Colonial House

Colonial homes are part of the rich tradition of American architecture. Originally bringing European style to the shores of the Northeastern America, colonists began a tradition of classic home design that has lasted for centuries. Here's how you can build a colonial house and celebrate your American history.

Instructions

1. Understand what a true colonial home is. Colonials are simple two-story structures set in a square or rectangular design topped with steep roofs. Most original colonial homes have a large front door with symmetrical windows, as well as a fireplace and chimney located in the middle of the house.

2. Decide whether you want home design that reproduces the exact features of a colonial, a hybrid colonial revival that incorporates the New England, Southern and Saltbox styles, or a neo-colonial that combines a traditional colonial exterior design with modern interior details and conveniences.

3. Choose a plan that features the layout you want to see in your colonial home. You can easily find colonial home plans online.

4. Find a builder who knows build a colonial-style home. There are builders who specialize in reproducing the details of colonial homes, and they can offer you a plan as well. Most volume builders will not be true to colonial design, so if you're a purist, stay away from that type of builder.

5. Visit a Parade of Homes or a model home of a colonial home builder. Notice the interior details and find out what the possible options are for your home. Look for large vertical windows, wide plank wood flooring, a masonry chimney and foundation as well as wrought iron lighting and raised wall panels.
