Choosing the right paint brush is crucial to the life of the paint job.
Selecting a quality paint brush helps ensure the life of a paint job, and in the case of acrylic latex paint, synthetic brushes are the way to go. Avoid natural brushes, typically made out of animal hair. When the hair from a natural brush comes into contact with acrylic latex paint the oils from the hair absorb the water, drying out the paint. The result is often a streak or clumpy paint job.
Blended Plastic Synthetic Brushes
Blended plastic synthetic brushes are good for acrylic latex paint. Synthetic brushes are made out of a variety of plastics (including nylon and polyester) and other materials. Most often, synthetic brushes are high quality and produced with good materials. A primary reason to use a synthetic brush for acrylic latex paint is that the paint job will last longer than one done with a natural brush. Plastic brushes are designed to be easily cleaned and to allow the paint to come off the bristle easily. Acrylic latex paint also goes on more smoothly when using synthetic brushes.
Polyester Brushes
Polyester brushes work well for acrylic latex paint, especially on smoother surfaces. The polyester is not very absorbent and allows a lot of paint to be put onto the surface being painted. Acrylic latex paint and polyester brushes together make a smooth finish, and cleanup is a snap.
Nylon Brushes
Nylon brushes have more stiffness than any other type of synthetic brush. This makes them ideal for rough surfaces such as the wood or concrete. These brushes do come in a number of stiffness levels that allow for the roughness of a surface. Nylon brushes work well for acrylic latex paint for many of the same reasons as polyester brushes.
Air Brushes
Air brushes offer another type of "brush" to use for acrylic latex paint. Air brushes are less precise than synthetic brushes, but are easier to use. Air brushes use air pressure to spray paint onto a surface. They can paint houses, motorcycles, cars or tee shirts. Acrylic latex paint works well with air brushes because there are no bristles to absorb the paint. Cleaning is more complicated with air brushes because of the moving parts and the paint tank.
