Create Your Own Guy Cave Entertainment Room

Use your man cave to host entertainment activities for friends.

A man cave is a private room filled with items of interest and pleasure that help you unwind and relax. Because the room can take many forms, containing numerous activities enjoyed by men, designing it beforehand helps tailor it your preferences and hobbies, so it represents your style and taste. Putting everything on pen and paper allows you to designate a spot for the items you wish to include, such as a poker or billiard table, wet bar, entertainment center, conversation corner and sports items.

Instructions

1. Measure the length of the selected room and transfer it on graph paper. Include the locations of doors and windows so you design around them. Inspect the room's flooring and determine whether you wish to install new hardwood flooring, taking into consideration the additional costs involved. Also decide other structural changes you wish to incorporate, such as tearing down walls to make the space bigger or constructing divider walls to hide dryers and washers.

2. Choose a decorating style so you tailor the man cave to it. For instance, if you are a sports fan, consider painting the walls or applying wallpaper in your favorite team's colors. If you want to create a rustic space, select appropriate motifs such as hunting or fishing and paste them on the walls. Alternatively, paint the walls a neutral color if you want the man cave to house numerous items. Select a focal wall, preferably the largest or tallest wall in the room, and decorate it with a striking wallpaper or bold paint so it stands out.

3. Make a list of the equipment the man cave will feature, based on your hobbies and preferences, so you select their locations. Draw a key on a corner of the paper to represent the colors used in the sketch.

4. Determine the placement and arrangement of furniture on paper, creating small entertainment zones instead of piling everything into the space. Place the entertainment center in the middle of the room, or against the focal wall, so it stands out. Design the seating opposite the entertainment center, including comfortable seating options such as recliners, sofas and ottomans.

5. Draw the wet bar on a corner of the room, along with accessories such as a microwave and refrigerator. Draw the location of a card table, poker or pool table on a side of the room, along with chairs or benches around it for seating.

6. Include the locations of accessories that bring the room together. Mark the locations for wall art, shelves and freestanding shelving units. Include lighting options, such as a pendent light over the card or game table, floor lamps around the seating arrangement and wall sconces to highlight wall art or decorative items on shelves. Also mark on the graph paper the locations for rugs or spreads that lend a comfortable touch to the man cave.
