Painting ceramic figurines is a holiday activity for the whole family.
Christmas village ceramics are treasured keepsakes. Although you can buy finished houses and figurines, painting your own will provide your family with memories for years to come. You can paint unglazed ceramics that have been fired, referred to as bisque ware, with water-based enamel paints. Look for paints that are designed for painting ceramics, as they will give your Christmas village figurines a durable coating.
Instructions
1. Wash the figurines with soap and water. Let them dry.
2. Wipe the ceramic figures with a rag soaked in rubbing alcohol. Allow the alcohol to evaporate. This will take approximately 30 minutes.
3. Mix enamel paint colors on a plastic plate. Mix small quantities of paint. Concentrate on the colors you will need first, such as flesh colors. Add gloss medium, if you want the paint to be shiny.
4. Paint the faces and hands of the ceramic figures. Apply more than one coat of paint, if you don't want the paint to soak into the porous ceramic surface. Work in layers, applying paint to the figures' hair before painting hats. Apply paint to coats and other outerwear.
5. Add small details and facial features with very thin brushes. Fix any mistakes with a small brush.
6. Soak brushes in water when you are not using them. Wash brushes with soap and water after you finish painting the figures.
