Color Combination Ideas

Use three colors for a triadic color combination.

Whether choosing colors for your home or your wedding, most people have set ideas of their favorite colors and want to incorporate them into their surroundings. Combining colors can create interest and set a mood. Colors can be combined for dramatic effect or simply to be aesthetically pleasing. When decorating with color you might begin with your favorite color and search out other colors to combine to create the perfect setting.

Kids' Bedroom Colors

Choosing colors for a kid's room is a wide open field. Kids love color and for many, the wilder the better. There are ways to approach color combinations without letting kids go too far out with their choices.

Related color schemes allow you to choose colors that are next to each other on the color wheel. Combine colors like fuchsia, violet and blueberry for a girl's room or shades of blue and blue-green combined with dark forest green for boys.

Triadic color schemes combine three colors that may or may not be related. An often-chosen color scheme is a patriotic theme with red, white and blue. For young children, primary colors of red, blue and yellow may be combined to create a bright, playful room.

Contrasting color schemes are created by choosing colors that are the exact opposite on the color wheel. Opposite combinations include red and green, yellow and purple, and blue and orange.

Kitchen Colors

When choosing colors for a kitchen it is important to consider the more permanent fixtures in your kitchen. Your cabinets and appliances will most likely stay for awhile, but rugs and curtains can easily be changed.

Some people choose a monochromatic look in the kitchen, selecting a main color and adding varying shades of the color. Select a favorite color and look for accessories in shades of that color.

An all-white kitchen can be a bit sterile in appearance. Accent the white with pale blue. The addition of a light tan floor will help to reduce the sterile, cold look of an all-white kitchen while keeping the space bright. Neutral color combinations use varying shades of tan, taupe, black, white and gray.

Wedding Colors

Brides may choose traditional color schemes, but many brides look for unusual combinations to make a statement and create a memorable event.

Bright cherry red and lime green create a dramatic color combination for a wedding utilizing contrasting colors. Bridesmaids might wear red dresses and carry bouquets with red flowers accented with green orchids and lime green foliage and ribbons. Move away from traditional white linens and cover the tables with cherry red linens. Add accessories in lime green and create floral arrangements of red roses and lime green orchids and greenery in varying green tones.

Raspberry and aqua are other contrasting colors that will add a splash of color to a wedding party. Layer the colors to create interest. Aqua will be a hard color to find in flowers. Bouquets and floral arrangements can include deep raspberry colored roses combined with paler pink flowers. Tie the bouquets with aqua ribbons to complete the color scheme.

Chocolate brown creates an elegant, formal look for bridesmaids' dresses. Accent the brown with flowers in shades of brown, gold and orange to complete the look in a related color scheme.
