The Compatibility Of Exterior Offers

If you apply some paints over the tops of others, peeling will result. Before you paint the exterior of your home, learn which paints are formulated for compatibility.

Latex Paint

Exterior latex paint is water-based. This characteristic leaves it compatible with other water-based finishes. Latex paint is not compatible with oil-based finishes.

Acrylic Paint

Like latex paint, exterior acrylic paint is water-based. If you apply an acrylic latex or acrylic enamel over the top of exterior latex paint, it should adhere well. Acrylic paints will not bond with oil-based finishes.

Oil-based Paint

Exterior oil-based paint will not bond with either acrylic or latex paint. As the old saying goes, water and oil don't mix.

Considerations

Certain primers and paints aren't formulated for compatibility. Never apply oil-based paint over a water-based latex primer. Likewise, don't apply latex or acrylic paint over an oil-based primer. If you need to add a latex or acrylic paint over the top of an exterior surface already coated with an oil-based finish, prime the surface with a shellac primer; this type of coating is compatible with both oil- and water-based paints.
