Changing the color in a room from dark to light will make the room seem larger and in some cases more cheery. It is possible that you have procrastinated because the task seems daunting. Painting from dark to light really is not hard, only a bit more time consuming. Covering the dark paint with a primer will save you the expense of using several coats of the more costly wall paint. The coat of primer does not need to be a perfect paint job; it only needs to cover the dark paint.
Instructions
1. Apply painters tape to the ceiling edge and woodwork to prevent paint from accidentally touching the ceiling or trim. If the trim will be painted with primer, it is not necessary to cover the woodwork with painters tape.
2. Fill the paint tray with the primer paint.
3. Paint the walls using a quality primer with sealer. A primer will prevent the dark color from bleeding through to the light color. Use a roller for large areas and a paint brush for painting into corners and along edges near the ceiling and trim.
4. Apply a second coat of primer if the first coat does not conceal the dark paint.
5. Sand the glossy finish from wood trim using fine grade sandpaper. Paint will adhere to a rough surface better than a glossy finish. If the trim is not being painted or does not have a glossy finish, this step can be eliminated.
6. Paint the trim with primer if needed.
7. Use painters tape to cover trim if it will not be painted with the same light color paint as the walls.
8. Paint the room with the light color of paint.
9. Apply a second coat of light paint if needed.
