Fresh paint Inside

Using a paint roller will make painting go quickly.

Many people enjoy painting the rooms in their homes, but caution needs to be taken to ensure that it is done as safely as possible. Paints contain chemicals that cause poor air quality and can cause problems such as dizziness, headaches and eye problems. Using non-toxic paint and ventilating rooms are a few precautions painters need to take before starting a project.

Instructions

1. Choose a paint that is made for indoor painting with a label that states it has low levels of VOCs, or volatile organic compounds. These paints are less toxic and will be better for your health.

2. Paint at a time of year when you can have the windows open for several days in a row.

3. Move all of your furniture to the center of the room and cover the furniture and flooring with sheets or plastic to protect them from paint splatter.

4. Open all the windows and turn on any fans that you have. Set up the fans so they will be blow the paint fumes outside by pointing them at windows or doors.

5. Wash all of your walls and seal any cracks or holes using a molding compound. Sand any rough spots and wipe off the sanding dust.

6. Remove any hardware on the surfaces being painted. This includes doorknobs, light switch plates and any trim.

7. Use tape around the borders of the wall where you don't want paint to go. Use painters tape because it goes on easily and won't pull the paint off when you are finished.

8. Open your can of primer and stir it. Pour some primer into a paint tray and load a roller with the primer.

9. Roll the paint over the entire wall surface using smooth even strokes. Cover all the areas except the edges.

10. Paint the edges with a hand held paint brush, being careful not to spread it onto any un-taped areas.

11. Allow the primer to dry. This will take around 24 hours.

12. Repeat the painting process that you used with the primer, this time using your paint color of choice.

13. Continue ventilating the room for at least 48 hours by leaving the windows open and the fans on, weather-permitting.
