Fresh paint Metal Trim

Diluted paint will soak through fabric drop cloths.

If you plan to paint metal trim, you'll need to contend with a pair of complications. First, unlike wood, metal is a nonporous surface making it unsuitable for adhesion. Paint will not stick to metal trim unless you first abrade the surface by applying a specific type of etching primer. In addition, because metal is slick, you'll need to employ a specific application strategy or you'll likely end up with unattractive brush strokes in the finish coat.

Instructions

1. Clean the metal trim with dish soap. Rinse the trim and allow it to dry.

2. Cover areas adjacent to the metal trim with painter's tape. Cover the flooring below the metal trim with plastic drop cloths. Lay fabric drop cloths on top of the plastic ones.

3. Apply a light coat of galvanized metal etching primer to the metal trim. Overapplication of the primer may lead to visible brush strokes in the final finish. Allow the etching primer to dry and cure for four hours.

4. Wash the brush with water.

5. Pour 1 gallon of acrylic latex paint into the 2-gallon painter's pot. Mix in 1 oz. of water using the wooden stir stick, effectively diluting the paint to encourage a smoother finish free of unattractive brush strokes.

6. Apply two thin coats of the diluted paint to the primed metal trim. Do not over-apply, as this may lead to paint runs and drips. Allow two hours of drying time between each coat.
