Different design ideas can marry beautifully.
Whether you are an empty-nester downsizing to a condo or someone who enjoys the feeling of community afforded with condo living, decorating a condo presents some challenges. Most condos share two common problems: lack of storage space and too few windows. Every design element within a condo must be carefully orchestrated to create a living space that is functional and says "welcome home."
Open Floor Plan
Walls in some condos can close up the space and almost make you feel claustrophobic. Have a builder, contractor or architect take a look at your condo. Making the wall between the kitchen and dining room a half wall with a breakfast counter that doubles as a serving station is one option. Removing a half wall at an entrance is another. Taking out the wall between a dining room and living room is yet another consideration.
Wall Coverings
A light, neutral color palette in paints and other wall coverings will make any space appear larger. Light colors always reflect more light. Keeping the same color palette throughout your condo will give a feeling of continuity and design flow. For more interest, use grass cloth or heavily textured wallpaper in same neutral color palette on select walls throughout your condo.
Mirrors and Mirrored Walls
Small areas take on new life with mirrors. Before you hang your first mirror or mirror a wall, study what will be reflected. Mirror placement that captures a sliding door wall is like adding another window to your condo. Likewise, mirrors reflecting plants and flowers can bring the outdoors into your home. Mirrored walls can be done in many patterns and endless colors.
Kitchen Additions
Lack of storage space is really noticeable in a kitchen. Use a storage wall unit designed with shelves and cabinets on one wall to house items needed for entertaining. Get a countertop height, rectangular table in stainless steel or butcher block that works for casual meals and does double-duty as an island for food preparation.
Furnishings
Edit your furniture down to solid, quality basics. Oversized pieces are not appropriate for many condos. Look for pieces that provide both form and function: a wall bookcase to house a flat screen television, sound system, books and objects of art; tables with drawers; wardrobes with shelves and rods.
Accessories and Art
Put bold and contrasting color throughout your condo with accessories and art. The right groupings and placement of accessories and art will give an uncluttered look that reflects your individuality. Throw pillows, glass objects, plants and flowers and favorite collections are finishing touches for every décor.
