Gray is a wonderful neutral that comes in many different tones, giving it great versatility. When designing a room with gray paint, several factors must be taken into consideration before choosing a shade. One common issue is masculinity and femininity. Certain grays can look more masculine, while others can give a room a more delicate, feminine look. Another issue is style: Do you want a contemporary or more traditional room?

1. Choose the shade of gray for your room. Warm grays tend to lean more toward brown, while cool grays can look almost blue. Warm grays are wonderful for natural or traditionally styled rooms. Cool grays work well with contemporary and modern design.
2. Select a tone of gray. The lighter the gray, the larger a room will look. On the other hand, pairing two tones of gray can create depth in a room. For example, try painting a small room midtone gray, with one full wall a dark, almost black gray. This will give the illusion of more space.
3. Decide on the sheen of gray paint you will be using. Matte or eggshell gray have little or no shine to them, and although more difficult to clean, this finish can look great paired with natural textures like stone and wood. On the other hand, gloss and high-gloss gray will give a room a slick, shiny look and are very easy to clean.
4. Pick a texurizing shade of gray. This gray should be only about two shades lighter or darker than the base shade of gray. Texture can be added to a base gray by applying the lighter- or darker-shaded gray paint to a textured sponge, then dabbing the sponge all over the wall.
5. Choose a graphic design to put on your wall. Create stripes, polka dots or a checkerboard pattern using two slightly different tones of gray, making sure they stay in the same shade (warm or cool). Create straight lines with masking tape first, then fill in between the tape lines with the desired shades of gray.
6. Make the room more masculine or feminine by incorporating specific colors. For example, a more masculine room will have a base paint coat of a mid-tone cool gray, paired with brown and sage green. A more feminine room can pair oranges or reds with a warm gray.
