Your Sim will only paint a big picture if he's in a good mood, which is indicated by a green Plumbob.
"The Sims 2" allows your Sims to take on a number of different hobbies, including painting pictures of all sizes. When your Sim completes a picture he can either hang up his masterpiece in his home or sell it for some quick Simoleons. Big paintings sell for more money than small paintings and add more points to your environment when displayed in your home. Unfortunately, your Sim is more likely to follow his muse than your commands and will not always choose to paint a big picture.
Instructions
1. Purchase an Independent Expression Inc. Art Easel for 350 Simoleons. Place the easel in an open area of your house so that it is easily accessible and does not obstruct other objects like doors and appliances.
2. Prepare to use the easel by fulfilling your Sim's needs. Your Sim will refuse to paint if he is not in a good mood. Likewise, if he is in a good mood but one of his needs, such as hunger, goes into red while he is painting he will stop and take care of his hunger. Try to make all of his green before painting to be able to paint for as long as possible, as large paintings take the longest to complete.
3. Click on the easel and select the Paint command. Your Sim will start work on a new painting, however the size of the canvas will be randomly selected.
4. Click the easel again, if your Sim starts to paint a small or medium painting, and select Scrap Painting. Your Sim will get rid of the painting he was working on, giving you the option to try for a big painting again.
5. Click on the easel to continue painting the big picture whenever your Sim is in a good enough mood and has the extra time. It will take several hours for a Sim to complete a big painting and depending on his mood he may have to take breaks and come back.
