Preparing your walls before painting is an important step in order to get the professional-looking finish you want. Different sheens of paint, such as flat, satin or gloss, require different preparation and are suitable for different areas of the house.

If you want to cover a latex satin paint with flat latex paint, all you have to do is wash and dry the walls thoroughly and you're ready to go. You do not need to prime the wall unless you'll be using a significantly darker or lighter color.
Where to Use Different Paint
Flat latex paint is a good choice for areas in your home that don't get very dirty, such as hallways or living rooms. Flat paint is not very stain resistant and does not clean well. For high traffic areas such as bathrooms, the kitchen and a child's bedroom, it is best to use an eggshell or satin paint that is easier to clean.
Wall Condition
The condition of your walls can also dictate which finish of paint to use. Flat paint hides flaws -- ideal for walls with bumps or areas that have been repaired and for new walls with joints that are not as smooth as they should be. Higher sheen paints show more flaws in the walls.
