Do-it-yourselfers often find aluminum siding to be a difficult surface to paint, because they do not know condition metal to accept paint. Most amateur painters usually finish aluminum siding on a house with an ordinary acrylic or oil-based primer, followed by a fresh coat of paint. However, because aluminum is ill-suited for primer and paint adhesion, the best finishing method involves the use of a galvanized metal etching primer that will abrade the aluminum to promote a finish that will remain durable for a long time.
Instructions
1. Scrub oily or greasy areas of the aluminum siding with a water-based cleanser containing a degreaser.
2. Clean all of the aluminum siding using a pressure washer fitted with a low-pressure tip. Allow the siding to dry.
3. Use a roller to coat the clean aluminum siding with a galvanized metal etching primer. Wait six full hours for the primed aluminum siding to dry.
4. Wash all painting tools with water.
5. Use a roller, fitted with a clean, new nap cover, to coat the primed aluminum siding with an acrylic latex paint. Wait two hours for the primed aluminum siding to dry. Apply an additional coat if the etching primer shows through.
