Rustic Home Decor
The rustic home is reminiscent of a cozy log cabin in the woods nestled near a small lake. Ideal for the woodsman, fisherman or outdoor lover, the rustic look combines natural elements from the outdoors with modern amenities. This look is perfect for a log, cottage or chalet-style home. Most items can be hand-made or store bought, new or acquired through antique shops.
Wood furniture
Wooden furniture is a sought-after element in rustic home decor. Carved pine furniture is perfect for the living room area in front of a stone fireplace---creating a look of hearth and home. Overstuffed cushions and big comfy pillows are perfect accents for living room pine furniture. High-back willow chairs are wonderful accents for sitting rooms or entryways. The willow is a natural wood element that creates a whimsical look in a rustic home. Birch tables with glass tops are great for bringing a contrast of natural white bark against a log wall background.
Wood signs
For the rustic home, wood signs bring about a sense of nostalgia and true meaning. Reminiscent of the days when signs were used to recognize fishing holes and country kitchens, replicated signs are welcoming accents to the rustic homestead. Most of these signs start off on slate or barn wood and then are painted with acrylic paint. Some popular signs are "At the cabin," "Bear Creek Lodge" and "Welcome to the Lake." Typically, these signs are hung upon entry as a way to welcome guests.
Antlers
Decorating with antlers in the rustic home gives off a natural feel combined with a hunters retreat. The antler look is quickly gaining ground on the decorating circuit. Real and faux antlers are used to make many decor pieces for the rustic home. Antler chandeliers are one of the most popular, gracefully adorning a foyer or hanging above a pinewood table for a homey and natural look. Antler bowls are great accent pieces that can be filled with dry flowers or even candles for a way to bring the outdoors in. There are also antler fireplace tool sets that are both great accents for the fireplace and functional, too. The antler is incorporated to the end of an iron tool and used as a handle.
Antique accents
Antiques are welcomed in the rustic-style home. Reproductions of vintage stoves from the 1920s and 1930s are great for carrying the style through the kitchen. Hand-hammered copper cookware is a wonderful accent to the rustic kitchen. Copper pots and kettles can be left out on the stove for added flair. Antique crocks filled with wooden spoons and vintage utensils are great for having on the countertop and using while cooking.
Fireplace mantels are a great place to showcase antiques. Vintage snowshoes and antique fishing lures can frame a fireplace out nicely---especially with a stone mantel. Carved Indian statues look great standing guard on either side of a fireplace.
Fabric accents
Indian wall quilts are a great accent piece for the walls of a rustic cabin---especially log surfaces. They add color and contrast to the wall and surrounding area. Gingham curtains are a nice accent to windows throughout the home. Fur rugs are great in front of fireplaces and couches. Fur accents can also adorn walls for a cozy and comforting look. Polyester and cotton throws can showcase bear and pine-cone designs---these are great for throwing over a leather chair or couch. Matching accent rugs are great for entryways and hallways.
