Steel exterior entry doors do not require much maintenance and are less expensive than wood or fiberglass. However, they may show more wear over time. Nonetheless, steel doors make up about 50 percent of door sales.
Advantages
Steel doors consist of galvanized steel. They are weather resistant and do not crack or warp. Manufacturers offer steel doors in a large number of styles and coatings, with and without glass inserts and other decorative effects.
Disadvantages
Steel doors dent easily, which may not be easy to repair. If they are coated with a polyester finish, chipping can develop. Also, scratches may occur and rust may result if they are not painted, according to "Consumer Reports."
Prices
Steel entry doors, as of December, 2010 are priced from about $135 to $1,550, which is cheaper than other door materials. Fiberglass doors range from $300 to $1,750, while wood is the most expensive, from about $500 to $2,500.
