Fresh paint Stain Colors

Use wood stain to bring out the grain in any cabinet or piece of furniture.

Whether you're moving into a new home or updating an established place, one of the most important aspects is finishing and protecting any woodwork on walls, cabinets, decks or patios. Without finish, the wood can absorb water and dirt and become permanently damaged. By using finish, you can protect wood and add to the look of your home. Choose paint for a bright, colorful finish or stain for a more natural look. Although it only stains the wood, stain comes in several different shades.

Red Stains

Any red or mahogany stain is designed to bring out the red highlights in existing wood. Red stains include red mahogany, red cherry and red oak. Putting red stain on wood is a popular and classic design choice, but can make the wood very bright and colorful. If you choose red stain, match the stains across all the wood in the area. Choose red stains for woods like cherry, oak and mahogany, or for lighter woods that will take the color, like beech wood. Putting red stain on a dark wood is relatively pointless, since it won't show up.

Walnut Stain

Walnut is one of the darkest woods and is therefore one of the darkest stains available. Use walnut stain if you want to feature dark wood in your house, or if you have wood that has different ranges of color and needs to be evened out. Walnut stain is best used on wood that's already dark, or on wood that you're intentionally darkening.

Light and Natural Stains

Lighter stains are sometimes nothing more than a glossy finish on wood. Use light or clear stains on light wood that you don't want to color, or on dark wood that you want to leave in its natural state. These stains still play up the natural streaks and markings of the wood, but leave the wood in its original color and do not cover up any of its flaws.
