Use a paintbrush to apply gel stripper and a scraper to remove the paint.
Elements of your home's decor, including the painted walls, eventually become outdated and require replacement or revision. If your walls were painted with river rock paint, a type of paint that contains beads or grit to create a textured surface, and you are ready to go back to flat walls, you must strip the texture. Once you properly remove the texture, you can refinish the walls with paint or wallpaper.
Instructions
1. Unscrew and remove the cover plates on light switches and outlets.
2. Protect the surrounding surfaces. Cover the floors with drop cloths. Use painter's masking tape to mask trim.
3. Apply a thick layer of gel paint stripper to the wall using a paintbrush. Don't rub in the stripper with the brush; simply let it sit on the surface of the wall. The gel stripper starts to soften the paint and dislodges the texture particles in the river rock paint within 5 minutes but can be left to sit longer.
4. Use a paint scraper or a putty knife to scrape away the texture and paint. Keep plenty of paper towels or rags on hand to wipe off paint from the scraper.
5. Repeat the process if, after scraping, any textured paint still remains.
6. Follow the gel stripper instructions for neutralize and rinse the residual stripper. For some brands you only need to wipe down the wall with a towel. For others you need a mix of water and trisodium phosphate (TSP). Allow the wall to dry.
