Interior Wall Painting Techniques

Color wash on interior walls.

Interior paint is no longer simply white or beige; modern paint colors and techniques vary greatly. Custom-matched colors and a variety of decorative-paint applications can change the look and feel of any room.

Color Wash

A color wash is a blend of paint and glaze. Glaze is mixed with paint--1 gallon of glaze to 1 qt. of paint. Apply the mixture to the wall with sponges, brushes or plastic bags. The end result is an uneven, washed look similar to watercolor.

Stripes

Paint stripes onto your walls in a vertical or horizontal pattern. Use different colors, or different sheens of the same color. For example, alternate glossy and flat paint for a striped variation.

Lettering

Hand-painted lettering is commonly seen above doors, archways and fireplaces. Lettering is a great accent to a child's room. Apply inspirational sayings using a stencil made from vinyl lettering. Letters do not have to be a single color. Add a variety of colors to each stencil for a more colorful look.

Murals and Vignettes

Add more character to a room with a hand-painted mural or vignette. Paint the base coat of your mural an eggshell sheen, or higher. Using flat paint on a mural will absorb the paint too quickly. Transfer images to the wall using transfer paper or a projector.

Stencils

Decorative patterns can be added to an interior wall using a variety of techniques. When painting, use a dry, round brush to work paint through the stencil. Too much paint on the brush will leak under the stencil. Stencils are traditionally made of polystyrene, however, you can also cut them from vinyl masking film.
