Fresh paint Exterior Rock Siding

Painting exterior rock siding is an easy way to update the outside of a building. Properly cleaning the surface and applying a primer or sealer will result in a more professional product. Using a pressure washer and a paint sprayer will help expedite the painting process as well as enable you to apply a more event coat of paint.

Instructions

1. Prep the rock by first removing any debris. Use a garden hose with a spray nozzle or a pressure washer. Consult with a clerk at your local home improvement store on using a pressure washer. Some rock or grout may deteriorate when pressure washed. In this case, use a garden hose, and for tougher debris use a medium density bristled brush. Let the rock dry completely.

2. Apply the sealer or primer to the rock with a clean paint brush, roller or paint sprayer. Porous rock will require a sealer--again speak with your local home improvement store regarding the proper sealer or primer for your rock type. A paint brush will require longer work time, and a roller may not be able to coat the surface evenly. It is most efficient and effective to use a paint sprayer. You can rent a paint sprayer from your local home improvement store, but make sure to follow the instructions on use and cleaning. After the stone has been sealed or primed, let the surface dry. How dry the sealer or primer needs to be before painting will be outlined in the manufacturer's instructions.

3. Apply the exterior rock paint with a clean paint brush, roller or paint sprayer. It is ideal to apply two thin coats of paint instead of one heavy coat. This will help to hinder paint running and excessive dry times, which could lead to the paint peeling.
