Alter The Front Entry Steps Of Your House

Your home's entryway says a lot about the interior of your home.

The front entry steps of your home are the first things visitors see, and the visitors may be forming an opinion about your house without even knowing it. If your front entry steps are run down, cluttered or simply not attractive, this sends the message that the interior of your home may be this way too. You can change the front entry steps of your home with just a few simple steps to make it a warm and inviting place.

Instructions

1. Clear away any clutter from the front entry steps. This area can accumulate a lot of clutter, from children's toys to shoes and even old mail or newspapers. Clear all of these items away, and sweep the front entry steps thoroughly.

2. Refresh the front door. Even if you have a steel door, it may be looking a little tired and worn. Pick a color that goes well with your home's exterior color, and paint the front door. Take it down off of its hinges, and lay it flat to make painting easier. You can use a spray paint or regular exterior paint with a brush. Allow the door at least two hours to dry before rehanging, and wait six to eight hours before allowing anyone to touch it to avoid marring the finish of the paint.

3. Paint the front steps. Concrete or wooden steps can be painted with exterior latex paint, or you can use concrete stain if you prefer. Choose a color for the steps that will coordinate with the door and the exterior of the house. For example, if your home's exterior is green and the door is now ivory, you could paint the steps a neutral tan color. Give this paint six to eight hours to dry before walking on it.

4. Install hand railings on your steps. Railings give an added touch of class to an entrance way and can also make the stairs safer. Select a railing style you like, and install it on your steps using a drill and screws. If your steps are concrete, you will need to first use a masonry bit to drill the homes for your screws.

5. Finish off the look with flowers. A simple flower pot placed by an entrance way can add instant charm. Choose plants that are easy to care for, such as petunias for full sun or impatiens for shade.
