If you want to create a poster for a presentation or for advertisement, you may need to make multiple copies of it. Before image editing and presentation software became popular, you would have had to design the poster by hand on posterboard. Today you can create a poster in a program such as Word or Paint and save the design to external media to print later. Many Windows 7 computers have a pre-loaded starter version of Microsoft Word and all Windows computers have Paint.
Instructions
Microsoft Word
1. Open Word and start a new document.
2. Click the "Page Layout" tab in the ribbon and then click "Size."
3. Select "A3" from the drop-down menu. The page is now sized in A3 proportions, which is 11.7 inches wide-by-16.5 inches high.
4. Select your background color by clicking "Page Color" under the Page Background tab. Be aware that colors will make your poster more expensive to print. For best visibility, use dark text on a light background.
5. Zoom out to see the whole canvas by dragging the zoom bar in the lower-right of the program window.
6. Justify the page to center, enlarge the font and type your heading.
7. Type other information and insert images or tables where necessary.
8. Save the poster design to a USB flash drive to take to a print shop, or save it to your computer and print it if you have an A3-capable printer.
Paint
9. Open Paint.
10. Click the top-left button to open the main menu and select "Properties."
11. Click "Inches" radio button in the Units section. Set the canvas width to 11.7 and the height to 16.5.
12. Use the "Text" tool to add text and the other tools to create your poster.
13. Save the file as a JPEG extension. This is smaller than the default Paint format, making it less taxing on printer memory.
