Concrete Fundamentals That Appear To Be Like Rock

Giving a concrete foundation a stone look can be easy.

Concrete is a durable mix of cement, water, rock and sand. It is extremely diverse, able to withstand freezing temperatures, wear and tear and even moisture by mixing special ingredients into the standard formula. This diversity and resistance to damage makes it a favorite for home foundations. To pull away from the somewhat boring or unsightly color, fresh concrete can be given a number of treatments to resemble more flattering stone, river rock or granite.

Stamping

Stamping is a decorative method used to create a faux stone, brick or rock effect. The technique is most commonly used on patios, pool decks and driveways but may be applied to the concrete that is used in building a foundation. Color options vary greatly depending on the manufacturer and may be chosen from existing or custom options. Stamping concrete is a cost-effective way to give your home the rock appearance but with a significantly lower cost. The method may be applied to an existing foundation but would require that an overlay -- a thin layer of new concrete --- be applied. This would have the added advantage of fixing minor cracks and other superficial damage.

Veneers

Veneers are a fairly inexpensive option for making concrete resemble rock. Since the veneers are significantly lighter than natural river rock and cost less, it tends to be an excellent upgrade for homeowners. Depending on the manufacturer, the veneer is between 3 1/2 and 5 inches deep. Most will resemble river rock placed in mortar and come in a wide variety of sizes, colors and textures. These veneers are manufactured by several companies across the country and available from home improvement stores. It is generally an easy process but may take some time and practice to perfect. Installation varies depending on the manufacturer, but veneers tend to be long lasting and durable.

Paint

Paint is another decorative process that can create the effect of rock on concrete. This is perhaps the least expensive option, though one that may require special skill. The process requires careful cleaning of the concrete or that an overlay be put down before starting. Once this has dried, two coats of the primary color -- usually a stone gray --- can be brushed or rolled on. After these layers have dried, they are dappled with the complementary color using a sponge or wadded plastic bag. This dappling effect can be done with additional materials to create more variety in the texture. As the paint dries, swipe it gently with a feather duster to blend the colors. Once they're dry they should be sealed with a clear coat or waterproof concrete sealant.

Concrete Tile

Concrete tiles can be laid like a veneer over an existing foundation. It comes in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes and generally costs less than using traditional rock. The tiles come in more than a dozen design options, including brick, granite and stone, and customers can select just about any color. The tiles can be created in standard brick shapes or more complex custom geometrics and can have a matte or polished appearance. Care for these tiles is simple, and their durability means they tend to last longer and hold up to more intense conditions than typical stone tiles.
