Clean Colored Aluminum Siding

Painted aluminum siding requires caution when you are cleaning it because any excessive pressure could result in dents that are difficult if not impossible to get out. At times, dents can be hammered out, but you usually have to replace the entire panel. That being said, a garden sprayer is a better choice than a pressure washer for cleaning your painted aluminum siding. It is a little quicker than applying cleaner by hand and doesn't bring as much risk with it.

Instructions

1. Put a tarp or plastic sheeting over any plants that lie next to the house. Move items, such as toys, out of the yard so that they don't get dripped on or get in the way of the ladder. Set up the extension ladder at the left end of one of the sides of the house, about 3 feet from the corner, so you can work from left to right, moving the ladder as needed.

2. Fill a 2 gallon bucket with lukewarm water and add a teaspoon of liquid laundry soap that does not contain bleach. Stir the solution with the spoon or with your hands. Fill the garden sprayer to the top with the solution or climb to the middle of the ladder and have an assistant hand you the bucket so you can set it on the ladder's shelf without having to carry it up. Climb high enough so that you can reach where the siding meets the roof, since you will be cleaning the house from the top down.

3. Pump the garden sprayer and begin spraying the siding as far as you can reach from left to right (angle the nozzle up so the solution will drip downward). Or, dip a gentle scrub brush in the bucket solution and apply the cleaner that way. Regardless of your method of application, use the brush to gently rub off any dirt or debris.

4. Work your way down the house until you reach the ground. Then take your garden hose with the sprayer attachment and rinse the entire area you just cleaned, beginning at the top. Move your ladder about 5 feet to the right and then start again with Step 1. Continue until you have finished cleaning all of the aluminum siding. Let it air dry.
