House Roof Colors

Slate is often the color of older roofing.

A roof at the top of a house is an imposing feature that can affect a home's overall appearance as much as the exterior walls and trim. Roofing, like siding, comes in a variety of types and shapes, each of which help define the character of a house. Many of these roofs come in different color schemes which help the roof to better complement the siding while also further characterizing the house itself.

Charcoal

Charcoal is a dark gray color that complements most colors of home from white and muted blue to vibrant green and dark purple. This color is often found on tar conglomerate as well as cedar shingles but works as well on a flat roof as it does on a sloping A-Frame.

Brown

A natural color that works well with wooden or organically colored houses, brown works well with maple colored siding but is not always ideal for white or green shades. Cedar shingles as well as many types of metal and plastic roofing come in brown. This color does not reflect heat well.

Terra Cotta

A shade darker than clay, terra cotta often appears with Spanish style shingle roofing, although the color is also available in metal and plastic roofing. This color provides an earthy and organic tone for the home and goes well particularly with stucco and off-white colors.

Slate

Dark colors are very popular for roofing and tar-based shingles as well as older stone shingles naturally feature a slate color. This dark gray has a hint of blue and works well with both dark and light colored homes.

Ivy Green

Ivy green is a specialty color for roofing, most prominently in metal and plastic roofing. This color roof provides an organic and almost woody feel and goes particularly well with homes that exhibit a natural wood siding. Green roofing also complements white houses.

White

White roofing is an eye-catching option that not only complements several house colors but also reflects a great deal of light and heat from the house at its most exposed area. This results in lower heating bills and a lower ambient temperature in the home.

Red

Red roofing is another exotic option for roofing but shades such as burgundy, rustic red and crimson red are all available for roofing in metal and plastic. Shades of red work well with natural wood color siding as well as shades of white and blue.
