Designing Suggestions For Teenagers

A young man's home should reflect his interest.

Young men fresh out of college need an apartment that reflects their new life. It should say, "I've left my teens and college years behind and I'm ready to go forward in the life I've been preparing for the last 20 years." It should be a place that is young, energetic and represents the young man's career and interest.

Paint

Unless the apartment is freshly painted, ask the landlord if you can paint. Most landlords are happy to let you paint as long as it is a nice earth tone. It saves him time and money. Choose a neutral color of off-white or beige. A freshly painted apartment smells good and is clean.

Furniture

Keep furniture to a minimum at first, as you can always add more furniture later. Create an entertainment area with a neutral sofa in front of a large-screen TV. Place a stack of large pillows in a contrasting color around the room so guest can sit on them during your favorite sports event. Make room in the living area for a desk and bookcase. A good mattress set in the bedroom is more important than an entire bedroom set. Paint a mural of a lake on the wall at the head of the bed in place of a headboard. Buy a dresser from a thrift shop and redo it for the bedroom. If you have a bar counter in the kitchen, opt for bar stools instead of table and chairs. Buy modular storage containers. Remember, less is best in a small place.

Wall and Room Decorations

Let the wall decorations reflect you and your personality. If you are a big sports fan, get posters of your favorite team or sport and frame them. Make a picture grouping behind the sofa. Add a splash of color in your wall hangings. Put shelves up for any trophies and awards from high school and college. Add a colorful rug in front of your couch and next to your bed. Make it your own but don't clutter.

Window Treatment.

Small apartments are sometimes dark so you need to take advantage of any light coming from a window. But you do not want to listen to the noise from the neighbors and the street. Keep your drapes simple. Go to the thrift or discount store and buy insulated drapes in a color that complements the apartment. The drapes can be open during the day for light and closed at night to keep out the noise and cold.
