Some research (see "Additional Resources") indicates that using ceramic bead additives along with standard house paint can refract and block heat radiation, radiating as much as 90% of solar infrared rays, and 85% of ultra violet-rays, back into the atmosphere. Studies also suggest that by using ceramic paint additives, you can reduce heating and cooling costs by as much as 50%, while spending as little as $3.34 per square foot.If you choose to use ceramic bead additives, here are some simple tips to help make sure your project goes smoothly and efficiently.
Instructions
1. Use ceramic bead additives with any type of paint or coating. Flat paint, high gloss, semi-gloss, and both interior and exterior paints, have all been successfully used with ceramic bead additives. Additives may also be used with powder coatings, stucco, plastics and composites, as well as many other types of material. (If using a material other than paint, be sure to consult the product manufacturer for information on mixing and applying ceramic bead additives using that specific material.)
2. Determine the area to be painted. Knowing which areas of your home to paint depends entirely on the effect you are trying to achieve. To keep heat out of an area, you should paint the exterior surfaces (walls, roofs etc...) with exterior paint, mixed with ceramic bead additives. To keep heat inside, on the other hand, you should paint the interior surfaces.
3. Determine how much paint you will need. The standard rule is to plan on 1 gallon of paint for every 400 square foot of surface to be covered, for a single coat. If the area to be painted is very porous, or has deep textured grooves, you will need to purchase up to 2 gallons per 400 square foot, for a single coat. Compare this standard with the manufacturer's recommendations for your specific brand of paint, before beginning your project. (Mixing in the ceramic bead additives does not change the amount of paint needed to cover the surface.)
4. Mix equal parts of ceramic bead additive and paint, to achieve the best results. One gallon of paint, should be mixed with a one gallon container of the bead additive.
5. Paint the surface as you normally would. The paint will dry to a hard, smooth surface, with a slight texture, which is similar to suede.
6. Add a second coat for best results. The second coat helps to ensure that the ceramic beads are evenly distributed, which will provide the highest amount of energy savings over the long term.
