Painting the inside of an air-conditioning duct ensures that anyone looking up through the slots in your grills does not see galvanized metal. It's a visual illusion that's easy to do yourself, if your installers did not do it for you. The grills come off easily, making the boot, which is the formed galvanized metal piece that your register vent is attached to, accessible for cleaning and painting. And if you prepare the surrounding ceiling, as the professionals do, you won't need to repaint the ceiling after painting the duct.
Instructions
1. Turn off the heating and cooling at the thermostat.
2. Take the register's grill off by unscrewing the screws at the left and right sides of the grill. Set it out of the way.
3. Split the seams across the bottom and sides of two garbage bags, leaving the opening at the top intact.
4. Position the garbage bags at the opening of the duct, so that the plastic can be taped on all sides of the duct, and tape them, with painter's tape, to protect your ceiling from overspray.
5. Spray the galvanized metal boot with a general purpose cleaner.
6. Wipe the cleaner and dust from the boot with a cloth, being careful to avoid any of the metal joints that could cut your hand. Allow the boot to dry thoroughly.
7. Spray the galvanized portion of the air-conditioning duct with flat black spray paint. Allow it to dry before reassembling the grill.
