Bring The Shore Inside

Use the colors of the ocean to bring the feel of the beach inside.

Many people enjoy a visit to the beach, but few are able to live there year-round. However, it is easy to decorate a room so that it reminds you of the beach, creating a relaxing atmosphere. Bringing the beach inside is also a project that is suitable for any budget. You can completely redecorate a room, replacing the furniture as well, or simply paint the walls or add different curtains to create a beach theme.

Instructions

1. Paint the walls. You have several options. An easy option is to paint the walls a soft blue, grey-blue or green-blue that resembles sky or ocean. For a slightly more complex look, measure from the floor to partway up the wall and divide the wall horizontally with painter's tape. Paint the lower half a soft beige and the upper half a light blue. This suggests beach, ocean and sky. Use more vibrant colors for a tropical theme.

2. Change the curtains. Sheer or light curtains are best for a soft, breezy feel. White is best, but you could use other colors, especially if you want a tropical look, which requires more vibrant colors. You can use curtain rods that look like shells or driftwood.

3. Replace the pictures. Use images of the ocean, ships, fish or shells. For a do-it-yourself project, buy plain canvases and acrylic paints. Paint the canvases in blue or blue-green gradients for a fast and easy custom look. You can also decorate using photographs of your own trips to the beach, or, for a whimsical approach, use a photo editing program to replace the background of a photo of you or your friends and family with a beach background.

4. Replace the carpet or add a carpet. A plain light brown carpet not only hides dirt well but is the same color as sand. You could also use patterns of tropical flowers or other more unusual beach-themed patterns.

5. Purchase white or weathered shelves, tables and other furniture. If this is too expensive for your budget, try using white crackle paint on furniture that you already have to create a weathered look. Adding pillows with striped or nautical-themed fabrics is another easy way to change the furniture you already have to look more like the beach.

6. Add objects to the room to emphasize the beach theme. Jars of sand, shells or beach glass are convenient and easily dusted. You can also use old bottles, driftwood, large shells, shell-themed frames, weathered sculptures of boats or animals, glass floats, lanterns or any other nautical-themed item.
