An outdated gold chandelier can be given a new lease on life with a simple coat of paint.
Of all the fixtures in a home, light fixtures seem to go out of style more quickly than others. Unfortunately, good-looking, quality light fixtures can be quite expensive, so it is not always practical to buy new light fixtures as styles change. However, you can update the light fixtures in your home using paint and a little elbow grease. Even a gold chandelier can gain new life through a fresh coat of paint. An updated chandelier can make an outdated room look stylish again.
Instructions
1. Arrange an outdoor workspace. You will need to hang your chandelier from something, such as a children's play structure, a tree branch or a structural beam in a carport. Spread a drop cloth beneath your work area.
2. Remove all light bulbs and other removable parts from the chandelier that you do not want painted. If there are parts of the chandelier that you do not want painted but cannot remove, cover them with masking tape and plastic grocery bags.
3. Clean the chandelier thoroughly to remove all dust, cobwebs, grime or other contaminants that you do not want to forever cover with paint. Begin by wiping down the entire chandelier using a dry cloth. If there are parts that need scrubbing, use a wet wash cloth and a mild detergent. Allow the chandelier to dry completely.
4. Apply spray primer by using sweeping strokes of the can. It is better to apply several light coats than one heavy coat of primer. Hold the spray paint can at least 12 inches away from the chandelier. If you spray too close, the primer will puddle and drip. If this happens, allow the primer to dry completely, sand off the drips, and reapply the primer.
5. Apply the color of your choice using spray paint. Again, use sweeping motions to avoid a puddles and drips, and paint the chandelier with several light coats of paint instead of one heavy coat. Allow the paint to dry completely, re-evaluate to see if you need another coat, then apply another coat, if necessary.
6. Remove all masking tape and plastic grocery bags. Reassemble the chandelier, by attaching all removed parts and light bulbs. Reinstall your newly painted chandelier in your home.
