Beach House Kitchen Ideas

Decorate your kitchen to complement the beach environment.

If you have a home located on the beach, decorate the interior in a style that reflects the scenery and lifestyle of such an environment. For instance, bring the outdoors in by using colors that are commonly associated with this landscape and use materials that are easy to care for. When decorating your beach house kitchen, choose cabinetry, furnishings and decorative accents that complement the atmosphere of the view that's just outside your door.

Color Choice

Make it seem as if the outside is flowing inside by choosing colors that reflect those naturally associated with the beach. Aqua and sea green are natural choices, as they echo the colors of the sea and sky. Other likely color choices are hues that call to mind the look of sand---for instance, tan, beige and taupe. If you'd like to create a more nautical look, choose cobalt blue and white. Even shades of pink---such as coral and salmon---evoke images of the beach, as you see these colors in shells and coral. Use these colors to paint your walls, on your countertops, in your flooring and in your kitchen's decorative accessories.

Cabinetry

Cabinetry is an essential fixture in a kitchen, as it provides necessary storage. Cabinetry can also create add visual interest to the space and help to create a specific look. In a beach home kitchen, choose a light wood---such as maple, oak, pine or birch. Another option for this space is pure white or whitewashed cabinets. Glass front doors give an open and airy feel to the room. Add interest to the glass by having a beach-inspired design etched into it. If you want a really open look, go door-less, or skip the cabinets altogether and use floating shelves for storage.

Countertops

There are several materials to consider when choosing a countertop that will suit the look of this space and will stand up to the everyday wear and tear experienced in a kitchen. Travertine or light-colored granite offers a beachy look and both are heat- and scratch-resistant, making them an ideal choice for a kitchen countertop. Choose durable ceramic tiles in colors that match the rest of the space---or have a specific design made for a one-of-a-kind look. A butcher block offers a natural look for the space and is an ideal cutting surface.

Beach-Inspired Accessories

Accessories help to tie the look of any room together, and a beach house kitchen is no exception. Wicker and rattan baskets hung on walls add style to the space and you can remove and use them to serve bread, chips and other types of food, making them a functional decorative accent. Use wood or stainless steel salt and pepper shakers and napkin and paper towel holders. Set glass canisters on countertops. Display prints of beach landscapes on the walls. Lay a rattan, sea grass or braided area rug on the floor to warm up the space.
