Suggestions For Painting & Designing Children'S Rooms

A child's bedroom should be where they love to play best.

Painting and decorating a child's room is a fun project for the parent and child to do together. Children will love to create a space all their own, and parents will love to have an organized, decorated space for their child's things.

Inspiration

Look at pictures of decorated rooms to determine the color and decorative scheme that you want for your child's room. Online stores that sell children's bedding and decorative items often are great places to visit for inspiration. You can also look online for room makeovers.

Colors

Before you choose the theme or decorations to use in your child's room, you must decide on a color scheme. You can pull colors from almost anything, such as a child's favorite toy or game, bedding, nature or even your child's favorite color. Try to choose at least 3 different main colors to use in the room. You can use more colors, but do not use more than 3 main colors or the room may not seem cohesive.

Themes

Allow your child to suggest a theme. Your child may have an idea of how he or she wants the room to look. You may also want to look at themes available at children's decorative stores or online. There are hundreds of themes to choose from. Some themes even come in multiple color palettes.

Storage

Storage is an important aspect of any child's room. Fortunately, there are hundreds of decorative storage options to choose from that will fit in with any theme. White or pastel-colored storage containers generally are used for girls, while wood or bright colored containers are used for boys.

Bedding and Curtains

Bedding and curtains should compliment the theme and colors of the room. In most cases you will want the bed to be a focal point of the room, so choose a complimenting color rather than one of the main colors for bedding. Avoid white bedding as they will need to be washed more often than colored bedding because they will show dirt much sooner.

Decorations

You do not have to use expensive decorations in your child's room. Allow your child to make or color art for his or her own room. You can also paint or draw pictures to place on the child's walls. Old toys can be used as decorative items. Many discount stores also sell inexpensive decorative items for children.
