Clean Stucco

Stucco is relatively easy to keep clean: A gentle spray of water is usually all you need to wash dirt away. Because stucco is porous, stains may absorb into it, so they should be treated immediately. If the staining material can't be washed away, you will need to take some more in-depth measures. Only clean stucco that has already set and hardened---this happens within a few days after the initial application. Attempting to clean stucco that hasn't yet set will only wash it away or, at best, deform it.

Instructions

1. Pre-wet the stucco surface by spraying it down with a spray attachment on a garden hose. There's no need to use a high-pressure wash for this; just get the surface thoroughly wet, starting at the bottom and working up. This helps keep dirty water from absorbing into the pores of the stucco later on.

2. Direct a higher-pressure spray from the garden hose at the stucco if your spray attachment allows this kind of adjustment. If you can't focus the spray to be higher pressure, scrub the stucco with a nylon-bristled brush to remove dirt. Do not use a pressure washer.

3. Mix the following into a half-full two gallon bucket of hot water: A generous squirt of liquid dish soap, 1/2 cup washing soda and 1/2 cup borax. Dip your scrub brush in this mixture, scrub any stained areas vigorously, and blast with the water from your garden hose.

4. Rinse the stucco from the top to the bottom, to rinse away any dirty water.

5. Allow the stucco to dry. How long the stucco will take to dry will vary, depending on the humidity.
