Seal & Fresh paint Masonite Siding

Never seal horizontal seams in Masonite siding because it will trap moisture.

Masonite siding is a type of composite surface composed of pressed wood chips. Although it isn't as durable as regular hardwood; it is quite a bit cheaper, and this makes it a popular choice for many homeowners. If you plan to paint Masonite siding, it's vital that you properly seal it against harsh weather conditions to prevent premature decomposition and mold, mildew and fungal infestations. However, if you improperly seal Masonite, you can actually end up encouraging these types of growths which can lead to serious problems that are expensive to repair.

Instructions

1. Clean the Masonite siding using a pressure washer. Allow the surface to dry completely before moving on.

2. Protect areas you don't want painted by covering them with blue painter's tape. Protect larger areas like driveways, porches and sidewalks by covering them with heavy-duty fabric drop cloths.

3. Cut the tip from a tube of caulk and load it into the caulking gun. Seal all seams and cracks running vertically along the Masonite siding. Do not seal any horizontal seams. Allow all of the caulk to dry for one full day.

4. Fill a 5-gallon bucket halfway with latex primer. Affix the cover to the roller frame. Apply primer onto the Masonite siding using the roller. Begin at one corner of the house and roll vertically moving from left to right. Apply primer to any tight, detailed areas that prove inaccessible to the roller using a latex paintbrush. Allow the primer to dry for two full hours.

5. Wash all painting tools with water.

6. Apply exterior latex paint to the Masonite siding in the same manner as you did the primer. Allow the paint to dry for two full hours and then apply an additional coat if necessary.
