Make Grey Fresh paint

You can make gray paint by mixing complementary colors.

When you're in the middle of a painting project, you probably don't have time to run out to the hardware store and buy a bucket of a color you forgot to stock up on. Fortunately, paint mixes easily, and you can blend colors at home with just a brush. Gray is one of the simplest colors to mix and can be made one of two ways. While an intuitive solution is to combine black and white paint, you can actually make gray paint without either of those colors.

Instructions

White and Black

1. Pour out your white paint, pouring almost as much as you need for the entire project.

2. Add a proportionally small bit of black paint. For a small portion of white, start with just a drop or two of black.

3. Mix the paint with your brush. Slowly add more black paint, continually mixing until you have reached the shade of gray you want.

Complementary Colors

4. Choose two colors that are perfectly complementary, like corresponding shades of orange and blue. Refer to a color wheel to see which colors are complementary. Pour out a portion of one of these colors that is half as much as the amount of gray you need.

5. Pour out a portion of the other color. The two portions should be equal.

6. Mix the paint with your brush. If the colors are suitably complementary and the amounts equal, it creates gray.
