Thicken Interior Acrylic Fresh paint

Interior acrylic paint can be thickened to cover various kinds of surfaces.

Interior decorators will usually advise against thickening interior acrylic paint. Its texture and viscosity ought to be perfect for covering your walls and trim, and will require the least number of coats to hide underlying color. But for those employing certain decorative painting techniques, a thicker paint body may be desirable. If you wish to create a textured surface, or want to cover small cracks or paint over masonry, a thickening agent can help you do that without ruining the paint's elasticity or reducing its opacity.

Instructions

1. Stir the paint with your stirring stick to ensure that the color and binders are evenly mixed. Pour the amount you need to paint with into your paint bucket. Reseal your paint container to prevent paint from drying out and forming a skin on top.

2. Add a bit of your thickening agent, hydroxyethyl cellulose, to your paint bucket. Read the directions on the label to determine the proper ratio of thickening agent to paint. Stir the paint and thickening agent until they are evenly mixed. If you find that you need a more thick mixture, add a bit more of the agent to the paint and stir again until they are blended.

3. Dip your brush in the paint you've prepared and brush some onto an inconspicuous area of the surface that you intend to paint. If the paint covers the surface adequately, continue with your project. If not, apply more thickening agent to the bucket and stir. If necessary, repeat the process until your paint quality is satisfactory.
