Prime the birdhouse before you paint it.
Whether it is made of wood, vinyl, plastic, fiberglass or metal, your birdhouse is ill-suited for paint adhesion and will reject new finishes unless it is properly prepared. Dedicate yourself to proper surface preparation, or you can expect to see rampant flaking at some point in the future. Employ the proper prep techniques, according to the composition of the birdhouse, and choose paint that is formulated to remain durable in exterior conditions.
Instructions
1. Clean the birdhouse, using a water hose and coarse plastic brush. Allow the birdhouse to dry for three to four hours.
2. Abrade plastic, vinyl and fiberglass birdhouses to promote adhesion. Sand the birdhouses until they feel slightly rough. Skip this step if the birdhouse is made of wood.
3. Protect portions of the birdhouse you don't want painted by covering them with masking paper and painter's tape.
4. Coat the birdhouse with acrylic latex spray primer. Maintain an 8-inch distance between the birdhouse and spray nozzle as you apply. Allow the birdhouse to dry for three hours.
5. Coat the birdhouse with acrylic spray enamel. Maintain an 8-inch distance between the birdhouse and spray nozzle as you apply. Allow the birdhouse to dry for three hours.
