Masculine Designing Ideas

Dark, rich colors work best in a room with a masculine design scheme.

When it comes to interior decorating, men often prefer a straightforward approach to design. Comfort is usually a higher priority than the room's aesthetics. If you are decorating a room with a man's tastes in mind, it is typically best to keep the design simple. Clean lines and functional pieces work best in a masculine d cor scheme, and frilly, lacy accessories should be avoided at all costs.

Darker Colors

Most men are not fans of pastel paint on the walls or delicate floral patterns on the curtains, so when attempting a more masculine decor scheme, dark, rich colors are your best bet. Consider shades like forest green, burgundy, chocolate brown or navy blue. If you would like to add patterns to the room, simple styles like stripes, plaids or checks are a good choice.

Functional Pieces

When designing a masculine room, simple and understated is the way to go. Furniture and other pieces should be functional and not merely decorative. Knickknacks should be kept to a minimum, and instead the room should be decorated with items that serve a purpose, such as a clock or books.

Leather Furniture

Leather furniture tends to give a room a tougher, more masculine feel. Sofas, armchairs and ottomans can all be purchased in leather. Pieces should be large and comfortable, so they have a presence in the room.

Wood Accents

Touches of wood throughout a room give it a more rugged, masculine vibe. Paneling on the walls, wainscoting around the room or exposed beams on the ceiling can create a cabin-like feel. Wooden details should be geometric in design with clean lines, not ornate or frilly. Hardwood floors are also a nice option to ramp up the masculine feel. Wooden furniture pieces stained in a dark, rich hue, such as a coffee table or bookcase, also work well.

Relevant Artwork

Instead of covering the walls with framed prints of famous paintings, choosing items that reflect the occupant's interest are the best choice. Sports memorabilia, such as framed jerseys or autographed photos, can be a nice touch for sports fans. Men who are avid sailors may appreciate nautical artwork, including seascapes. Travelers may appreciate having a globe or map on display. Framed personal mementos like diplomas or certificates provide nice d cor elements as well. Personal photos, particularly travel pictures, are often the easiest option for artwork.

Window Treatments

Instead of frilly or heavy curtains, choose pull-down shades or blinds for the windows. They provide a more streamlined look, so the effect is more masculine. Shades and blinds are also available in more colors than basic white, which makes it easy to find a style that complements the rest of the colors in the room.
