Choosing the right combination of colors for a room can be challenging.
Choosing the right paint colors to put on your walls is an important decision, because these colors will define your decorating scheme. When deciding on colors of paint, take into consideration the space you are decorating, its purpose and its size. Consider many combinations of colors before making a final decision.
Analogous Colors
Analogous color schemes are comprised of analogous colors, which are colors found side by side on the color wheel. For example, red and orange or red, orange and yellow would be analogous color schemes. Combinations of analogous colors, coupled with white, make a cheerful statement in a room. These colors may be light or dark and may be used in small rooms or large rooms.
Natural Color Combinations
Colors found grouped together in nature often make fabulous color schemes. For example, the colors found in an eggplant--a combination of sage green, deep purple and sandy beige--seem to go together naturally, even when these colors have been spread out in a room.
High-Contrast Combinations
Color combinations such as black and white, red and white and blue and gold, and complementary color combinations like red and green, blue and orange, and purple and gold, all involve two colors that stand in high contrast to one another. When used on the walls of a room, these colors can become overwhelming, so take measures to soften the impact of the contrast. Sometimes one color is allowed to dominate and the other color is used only in the trim. Other times, the high contrast is downplayed somewhat by using only the "earthy" versions of these colors--for example, a deep maroon might be placed up against a sage green, rather than using red and green.
Neutral Colors
Officially, neutrals are not colors at all--they're neutrals. The only real neutrals in color theory are white, black and gray. However, in reference to interior decoration, the neutral category is more broadly defined to encompass actual colors, and black is usually not included among the choices. In the case of interior decoration, a neutral color is an unsaturated, recessive color that easily matches a variety of other colors choices and color schemes. A neutral may make it hard to decide what kind of a color it is at all: it might be bluish-gray or light brownish-green, or a beige with hints of plum, and so on. These colors are almost like chameleons, because different colors will bring out different qualities in each neutral.
Still, neutrals can usually be broken down into two categories: warm, and cool. Warm neutrals have hints of red, orange or yellow embedded in them, and they tend to look best when the rest of the room is decorated with other warm colors like deep reds, warm browns and copper. Cool neutrals have hints of cool colors like blue and green. These colors usually look best when the rest of the room is decorated with cool colors. In addition, when combining two or more neutral colors on one wall, the most successful combinations will limit the colors to either warm or cool neutrals, but not a mixture.
Dispersal Of Colors
The typical impulse is to paint the walls of a room all one color. When using a combination of colors, one color generally dominates and the other colors are used as trim. Sometimes an accent wall is included. An accent wall is a single wall of a color different from the other three walls of a room. An accent wall may be radically different in hue from the dominant color, or it may be similar and difficult to distinguish.
