Find Matching Color Fresh paint Styles

Interesting paint color combinations can be found on a color wheel.

A complimentary color scheme can make the difference between an outstanding project and an unpleasant one. Choose a main color for your room followed by an accent color or colors. Choose a monochromatic design using colors in the same family, or choose colors that coordinate. A color wheel can make it easy to select a color theme, or scheme.

Instructions

1. Determine how you want the room to be used and how you want the space to feel. Commonly used colors have suggested meanings, and can evoke certain moods and responses. If your goal for the room is relaxation, choose a theme that incorporates complimentary shades of blue and green. For help in selecting colors, choose a blue or green shade from a color wheel and accent the room with colors on either side of your chosen color on the wheel.

2. Choose a main color and a complimentary accent color. To do this, choose a color on the color wheel and a color directly across the wheel as an accent.

3. Assemble a variety of matching or contrasting paint chip samples from home improvement and paint stores and tape them in groups to your walls. Observe the colors at various times of the day, paying close attention to how the colors look in different light. Many paint brands group together similar and contrasting color chips. Look at photos in magazines to see how decorators develop color schemes within rooms. Take note of accessories. Many times an accent color is repeated in pillows, rugs and art. The repeating color can be an understated white or cream, or a bold color such as orange or turquoise.

4. Enter colors you have chosen into a virtual room computer program to see how your chosen color combinations look together. It is much easier to make changes in the planning stage, rather than paint a large area more than once.
