Choosing a paint color for any room can be a daunting task. With an almost infinite selection of color choices available, it is sometimes hard to know which color is best. This choice becomes even more complicated in a bathroom, where you need to consider the colors of the permanent items in the room. If these items are neutrals like white, beige or gray, you can safely choose a coordinating paint color that matches for a monotone effect, that complements for a unified tone-on-tone look or that contrasts for a vibrating, exciting look.

Chose a Paint Color When Redecorating Bathrooms
1. Look at the current existing color scheme of the bathroom carefully. Note the color of the plumbing fixtures, the countertops, the cabinets and the floors. These colors will set the tone for the entire room and will dictate the choices you can make for paint.
2. If these items are neutral colors, you can choose virtually any color of paint for the room. If your fixtures have a saturated color tone, choose a color that complements them but doesn't compete. For example, if your fixtures are red, consider painting your walls white and adding deep blue towels for a red, white and blue color scheme. Embellish the patriotic effect by adding decorative items like a large metal star on the wall or painting a countertop-high red stripe around the room, or adding a themed wallpaper border.
3. Determine the overall mood and feeling you want for the room. In a couples bathroom soft muted greens and blues lend a serene and relaxing ambiance; for children, bright and bold colors create a room that is exciting, vibrant and energetic; and for a single man, black, gray and other neutrals create a sophisticated and masculine environment. You can expand these general rules into many more options, but they are a good starting place.
4. Also take into consideration the lighting in the room. Incandescent lighting produces a warm cast to the color, and fluorescents cast a cool light. If there is abundant natural light during the day, this will brighten any color you put on the walls. It is advisable to bring your paint swatches into the room at various times of day and night under different lighting to determine how the paint colors look under these conditions as the lighting will affect the hue.
5. Buy a small sample of two or three colors, and paint a small portion of each onto the walls and let it dry completely. Live with the colors on the walls for a few days, and enter the room at various times of the day or night to gage your emotional reactions to the color swatches. If one of the colors makes you feel uneasy or unsure, eliminate that color from consideration. If a color makes you feel good every time you look at it, it is a good indication you will love living with it.
