A mural can be painted on exterior or interior walls.
According to the National Society of Mural Painters, a mural is "a work of art designed for a specific wall, or area, to decorate a large architectural unit." Murals are painted on the interior and exterior walls of schools, hospitals, office buildings, restaurants and public libraries. Subject matter varies, as does technique. A mural can be painted by one person or as a collaborative effort by transferring an image to the wall using a grid method and then painting it using permanent acrylic or latex paints.
Instructions
1. Use a pencil to draw a grid on your original image.
Draw a grid composed of equal-sized squares on your image. If you are using an image on which you don't want to make marks, tape a clear transparency over it and mark on that.
2. Use chalk to draw a grid on the wall.
Draw a grid of the same number of equal-sized squares on the wall to be painted. The vertical row of squares and the horizontal row of squares must be the same numbers as that on your image. Use chalk or black pencil.
3. Transfer the image to the mural by drawing the outline of what is visible in each square of the image to its corresponding square on the wall. When all squares have been drawn, step back to be sure that the outline on the wall looks accurate. Re-draw lines and smooth connections between squares, if necessary. This step is especially important when working as a group on a mural.
4. Use latex paint for large areas.
Paint the image using latex paint for large murals and acrylic paints for smaller works. Blend the contents of each grid square and paint over the grid lines. You can also apply latex with large brushes on large areas of the mural and acrylic paints with small brushes to add detail.
