Wall-to-wall carpeting provides a luxurious look and feel to any home or office. Plush carpeting gives children a comfortable, safe and warm surface on which to play, and acts as a sound-absorber, helping to make a room quieter. In colder climates, wall-to-wall carpeting provides a warm surface on which to walk, and also adds insulation to the floor. Carpeting can emphasize a specific style, color or mood of the overall room décor. Choosing the best carpeting for your home or office, however, requires some thoughtful planning.
Instructions
1. Visit a carpet store and look at the various options. Talk with a knowledgeable salesperson about the room you wish to carpet---the purpose of the room, the activities that go on there---so that she understands the type of wear the carpet will get and can show you options that will best meet your needs. Ask her about fiber content, static build-up, wear, cleaning, warranty and padding information.
2. Make a comparison chart, and down the right side, list the features you want in a carpet. You may wish to include the budgeted amount you wish to spend on carpeting, the type of carpet you want (plush, looped, Berber, shag, indoor/outdoor or commercial grade), the color, the warranty, the fiber content, the padding thickness and installation cost.
3. Visit several carpet stores as well as home building supply stores and fill out the comparison chart, allowing a new column for each store.
4. Analyze your comparison chart to see which store has the carpet that best meets your needs and for the best price. Call the store for a free estimate, and the store will send someone to your home or office to take measurements and tell you how many square yards of carpeting and padding you will need to purchase.
5. Do your math and review the comparison chart again. If two stores offer the same or similar carpet, but one has quoted you a higher price than the other, do not hesitate to ask the store with the higher price if they will meet the other store's price. In some cases, they will quote you a slightly lower price than the other store so they can make the sale---and in the end, you are the winner.
